My ThinkPad X60s was shipped to me in MA directly from Shanghai China. When I tracked the UPS package, I was impressed with two things illustrated in this tracking report:
First, the package was shipped “UPS Ground” (included in the price) on 03/13 at 1747 and arrived at my home (yes, my garage signs for my packages – it’s a very handy garage) 03/16 at 1021. In case you don’t want to do the math, that’s three days, seventeen hours. Pretty damn impressive for gratis & ground!
Second, and even more interestingly, the tracking report is totally nonchalant about the fact that the item was shipping from abroad. It’s been a while since I’ve had items shipped to me from overseas, and the tracking certainly did not used to be this simple. That tracking report could just as easily have started from Boulder CO as Shanghai CN.
This week’s South Park was an amusing take off on 24. Not the funniest Sousth Park I’ve ever seen, but a must-view for 24 fans. Sadly, it was more entertaining than most of the 24 episodes thus far this season.
If you haven’t seen it already, Professor Michael Wesch’s “The Machine is Us/ing Us” is a great overview of the evolution of the Web, with wonderful pointers on where it’s heading.
Tip of the hat to Maggie for the pointer to the final video version on GooTube.
Chris Carter posted today about some of his favorite Firefox plugins. I hadn’t played with TabMixPlus, but after only about 90 seconds with it, I’m completely addicted. Absolutely a must-have!
As if having breakfast with Ashton Peery of TopTen Media Inc. at Henrietta’s Table this morning (reminiscing on MOM-STR) wasn’t enough of a celebrity moment, I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely and talented Mia Farrow on my way to the garage. Which is to say, of course, that we said hi to each other. Fun way to start the day!
Depending upon whose version of history you trust, Thelonious Monk wrote the incredible jazz standard ‘Round Midnight in the early 1940s. It is a stupendous tune that has been covered by countless artists in the last nearly-three-quarters of a century.
I have a collection of many hundreds of jazz discs ripped losslessly to the file server in our house. From that collection, there are 11 versions of the song from 9 artists, including the master from his 1957 album Thelonious Himself – a 21+ minute rendition of the tune, with stops and starts and even Monk chatting a bit. I can’t play favorites outside of Monk’s renditions, but I’ve always loved the ‘richness’ that Danilo Perez brings to the song on his album Panamonk.
I’m crunching through a big backlog of work I have to get done tonight, and in honor of the late night, I have 90 minutes of ‘Round Midnight on rotation. Lovely lovely lovely.
Know the smallest things and the biggest things, the shallowest things and the deepest things. As if it were a straight road mapped out on the ground … These things cannot be explained in detail. From one thing, know ten thousand things. When you attain the Way of strategy there will not be one thing you cannot see. You must study hard.
I found this site quite intriguing. I’m not surprised that folks are hacking Apple TV units – I’m just a bit surprised it’s happened so quickly! A friend of mine (I’ll refrain from naming names since I don’t know if it’s legal or not) spent a bunch of time hacking his Tivo units back in the day. The frequency and depth of push upgrades from Tivo Inc. put the kibosh on his efforts after a while (too annoying to re-apply all the mods after each major update). Will Apple behave likewise in this regard? Will they fight Apple TV hacking or let the consumer decide how they want to use the hardware?
I can’t tell if Bijan is just happy, or if this is some sort of shit-eating grin, or whether maybe Nabeel slipped something questionable into his double-mocha-skim-decaf-latte-with-a-twist . I couldn’t make it yesterday, but am looking forward to next week.
Kudos to ABC for releasing their television content to the web in the form of full episodes with limited commercials. I’m very encouraged to see a content owner like ABC getting on the train. Hopefully the filmed-entertainment folks won’t be complete morons like the music folks were. There’s plenty of money to be made here – ya just gotta be smart about it. Tip of the hat to Will.
