Panties + Purple + Pop

The music industry often creates interesting bedfellows. Sometimes it really clicks.

I’ve had a particular 80s throwback song on heavy rotation the last week that’s a truly neat combination of talent: Tom Jones singing a Prince song backed by Art of Noise.

Jones and Noise recorded this gem in 1988 and IMO it stands the test of time even better than Prince’s original version, recorded in 1986 on his album Parade. While Prince’s version is musically compelling with a lot of neat layers of sound and an impressive falsetto throughout (hey – love him or hate him – the man has some mad skillz), Tom Jones’s take has the raw sexuality that the song seems to crave.
